April 1 total lockdown claim is fake news

The National Security Council (NSC) this evening denied a claim making the rounds on social media that Putrajaya will impose a total lockdown on April 1.

According to the communications and multimedia ministry, the claim was made in an audio clip that has since gone viral.

The government recently extended the movement control order to April 14 to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic amid an increase in the number of new cases. It was initially scheduled to be lifted on March 31.

Last night, however, it declared a lockdown in Kampung Dato Ibrahim Majid and Bandar Baharu Dato Ibrahim Majid, both located in Simpang Renggam, Johor, following an unusual spike in cases there.

The NSC also denied allegations that 69 Rohingya from Selayang had tested positive for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the health ministry has advised the public against purchasing hand sanitisers that are not recognised by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency.

To date, the outbreak has claimed 26 lives and infected 2,161 people.
