Motorists in the Klang Valley with outstanding traffic summonses will be able to settle them at a 50% discount over the Christmas period, The Star reports.
Kuala Lumpur traffic investigation and enforcement department chief ACP Zulkefly Yahya said the discount offer will be valid during the police’s “Meet the Customers Day” event, which will be held from December 24 to 26 – between 8.30 am and 4 pm – in conjunction with the Christmas celebration.
He advised the public to come early to its KL headquarters located at Balai Polis Trafik on Jalan Tun H. S. Lee. “We are offering a 50% discount for various types of traffic summonses, and we hope that the public will use the opportunity to settle any outstanding summonses,” he said.
He added that not all summonses were eligible for the 50% discount – those that are excluded include non-compoundable ones and those attached to an ongoing trial as well as those issued during Ops Selamat and for accidents.
ACP Zulkefly said such discounts were last offered during the Chinese New Year earlier this year. “At that time, 1,600 people came forward to settled their summonses. We hope that more people will come forward this time,” he said. He encouraged motorists to settle their summonses before they are blacklisted.
Earlier this year, transport minister Anthony Loke had called for the ending of discounts for unpaid summonses (in this case, JPJ-issued ones), but the police said that without discounts, it would be unable to collect revenue. It said that only 30% of the five million summonses issued by police are settled every year.
