The transport ministry has revealed that the road transport department (JPJ) has collected RM1.165 million in application fees for the installation of tinted glass above the allowable limit.

Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat last week, deputy transport minister Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar said that 413 applications were received. These included those citing safety and health factors as well as people exempted from the application of Rule 11(a) Motor Vehicles (Use of Glass or Other Transparent Material) (Amendment) Rules 2019, Bernama reports.

In May, in line with the new vehicle tinting regulations, it was announced that a fee would be imposed on those seeking to darken the front windscreen and front driver/passenger side windows beyond the specified 70% and 50% visible light transmission (VLT) percentage.

Applicants would need to specifically apply for this, and pay a service fee of RM50 with their submission. Each approved application would be subject to a fee of RM5,000 for the next two years, which must then be renewed upon expiry of the validity period.

Kamaruddin reiterated that conditions had to be met for approval, with the applicant not having any cases pending with the JPJ, the police and has never been involved in a criminal case. He added that applications for the fee exemption based on health factors and medical conditions require a written verification from a government or private medical specialist approved by the health ministry.

Back in May, transport minister Anthony Loke said that despite there being revenue involved in the matter, not every application would result in approval. He had previously said that the government projected that the annual income from such fees would be worth around RM6 million annually.
