Porsche Taycan cabin shown – new passenger display

It seems the guys at Porsche can’t contain their excitement for the launch of the all-electric Taycan, with bits of news and features released nearly everyday. Well, after teasing us with a glimpse of the car’s dashboard yesterday, the company is sparing no flex by revealing the cockpit in full.

So, what we have here is a fundamentally classic Porsche cabin, but with more use of touch-responsive panels with haptic feedback. In true 21st century fashion, the cockpit is now completely free of buttons, save for those on the steering wheel and doors.

For the driver, there’s a newly designed three-spoke GT steering wheel (optional), and the one seen here comes fitted with a drive mode selector dial at the four o’ clock position and chronograph on the dashboard, both of which are usually part of the Sport Chrono pack.

Behind the steering wheel is a wide 16.8-inch display that forms the instrument cluster. Porsche says the cowl has been omitted to “ensure a slim and modern appearance in the style of high-quality smartphones and tablets,” so engineers have resorted to using a vapour-deposited, polarising filter to give the instrumentation an anti-reflective surface. Wonder how well that would work under direct sunlight.

There are four display modes for the instrument panel – Classic mode (with a power meter in the middle which replaces the usual rev counter), Map mode (replaces the central power meter with a map layout), Full Map mode and Pure mode (displays only essential driving information such as speed, traffic signs and navigation).

Access to the car’s exterior lighting and chassis functions are positioned at both edges of the instrument panel, and these are touch-sensitive items of course. The ignition button and electronic gearstick are located behind the steering wheel just below the instrument panel.

In the middle rests the familiar 10.9-inch infotainment display that is found in most modern Porsches, but the big news is the optional passenger display that’s combined to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look. Apple Music is already integrated, providing owners with access to over 50 million ad-free songs, thousands of curated playlists, and the Beats 1 global livestream, with three-year complimentary in-car internet data.

All vehicular functions is accessed via this central display, and the home screen can be customised with app tiles such as navigation, media, and Porsche Connect. There’s voice control, which is activated simply by saying “Hey Porsche,” as well as handwriting recognition. Below that is an 8.4-inch touch panel with haptic feedback, allowing air-conditioning settings to be altered directly.

As for the air vents, Porsche has introduced “Virtual Airflow Control” which replaces the traditional, mechanically-operated louvres. In the Climate menu, one can switch between “Focused” for fast, directional cooling and “Diffused” for draught-free air conditioning. If the optional Advanced Climate Control (four-zone climate control) is selected, an additional 5.9-inch touchscreen with haptic feedback allows the system to be operated from the rear seats.

Other notable features include a multi-coloured ambient lighting system, two cubbies in the centre tunnel, and the usual high-quality leather upholstery. Sustainability is also a big part of the Taycan, so it can now be optioned with a fully leather-free interior. In its place is a state-of-the-art material called “Race-Tex,” which is a microfibre material partially consisting of recycled polyester fibres. Its production has 80% less CO2 than traditional materials. The floor covering uses the recycled fibre “Econyl,” which is made from, recycled fishing nets, among other things.

As usual, the Taycan can be specified in a multitude of interior colours, although Black-Lime Beige, Blackberry, Atacama Beige and Meranti Brown are made exclusively for the Taycan. Trim options include matte carbon-fibre, embossed aluminium, fabric, or wood trim, which can be contrasted with matte black, dark silver, neodyme, or champagne materials.
