Coverage of the JPJeBid online vehicle number plate bidding system continues to grow, with Penang the next state in line to begin using it for vehicle registration transactions, the New Straits Times reports.

According to road transport department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Seri Shaharuddin Khalid, online bidding for Penang plates will start with the PPC series plate, from August 2-6.

The system began as a pilot project in April with the Putrajaya FC plate series, and the new format was then adopted for serial use starting with the Federal Territory, with the VDN plate series in June. This was followed by its introduction in Kedah.

Shaharuddin said the e-bidding system had made the department’s work easier, with everything done online and the system automatically awarding a plate to the highest bidder. “It is time-saving. It runs on real time and is efficient. The system tabulates and announces the winner almost immediately after the bidding period ends. Those days, we used to take up to two weeks to tabulate and come to a conclusion,” he said.

He added that the new system has brought in RM9.6 million in revenue to the transport ministry via seven rounds of e-bidding – five in Kuala Lumpur, and one each in Putrajaya and Kedah. The procedure for registration and the bidding process remains unchanged from that detailed earlier.
