If you’re looking forward to the arrival of the all-new A90 Toyota GR Supra, good news! The reborn sports car is set to make its local debut in September this year, according to Richi Lim, general manager of marketing at UMW Toyota Motor.

The announcement was made at the launch of season three of the Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) Festival, but details like specifications and pricing remain unknown for now. For a vague benchmark, the new G29 BMW Z4, the Supra’s close cousin, retails at RM479,800 on-the-road without insurance.

The Supra is offered with two engines depending on the market it is sold in, with the first being a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 197 PS from 4,500 to 6,000 rpm and 320 Nm of torque from 1,450 to 4,200 rpm.

The four-cylinder mill also comes in a higher state of tune, producing 258 PS from 5,000 to 6,000 rpm and 400 Nm from 1,550 to 4,400 rpm. The more powerful of the two completes the zero to 100 km/h sprint quicker at 5.2 seconds compared to the less powerful unit’s 6.5 seconds.

A second engine option (and the more likely one) is a 3.0 litre turbocharged straight-six that offers 340 PS from 5,000 to 6,500 rpm and 500 Nm from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm – zero to 100 km/h is achieved in 4.3 seconds. All engines are mated to a standard eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, with drive going to the rear wheels.

So, get those cheque books ready because we’re only a few months away from welcoming the latest addition to a legendary nameplate. Supra is back!
